The Weekend

I thought that the family picnic for the company where I'm temping was on Saturday, so Trevor and I rode our bikes down to the park. (Maya didn't feel like going.) Turns out I had the date wrong and it was on Sunday, so we headed to Rudy's Drive-In for lunch. In business since 1966, this is the kind of place that inspired the rise of Sonic drive-ins. The car hops are on roller skates and the root beer comes in frosty mugs. Like many places in the Midwest, they serve frozen custard instead of ice cream, which is fine by me.

We made it right before the lunch rush. It was packed by the time we left. They're only open during the warm weather months, so it's very popular during the summer.

I wasn't in the mood for a hamburger, but a root beer float is pretty much a requirement. They have pretty outstanding onion rings as well.

We spent the rest of the day on house and yard work and watching TV. I also vacuumed the car for the first time in a year. There were surprisingly fewer petrified French fries than I thought there would be.

On Sunday, we finally made it to the company picnic. It was catered by Famous Dave's barbecue and there was free Spotted Cow, which is my favorite beer, ever. I love Wisconsin.

The picnic was at Myrick Park, which overlooks the marshes. Don't hate because we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Maya has a to collect 25 bugs for her Honors Biology class, so after we ate we figured it'd be a prime place to look for specimen. I'll let Maya talk a little more about that.

I think this project is pretty gross because I have to freeze the bugs, then pin them to a board to display them. One of my friends got out of it by emailing the teacher saying it was gross, and the teacher said she could collect leaves instead, which has nothing to do with our first unit. Not. Fair. Another friend isn't having a lot of luck because all of hers keep disintegrating.

Right now I have two kinds of beetles, a lady bug, three kinds of moths, a butterfly, a cricket, a roly-poly, an ant, and a spider.

Okay, this is grossing me out so I'm not talking about it anymore.

What did you do this weekend?

  1. To Maya.   Almost everybody did this at some point in a science or biology class, but i never heard of freezing them.  I know you'd rather do rocks.

  2. OMG Root beer floats!!! I haven't had one in years...and the food looks delicious. About that project, I don't think I could ever do that...catching bugs just isn't my thing.

  5. Now I really want a root beer float!  Yum!

Maya - I had to do that project too, and I was not happy about it!  Make sure they are good and frozen when you pin them.  I had a grasshopper thaw and scare me to death when it jumped out of the container I "freezed" it in.  NOT. COOL.
