Located inside the City Square building in downtown La Crosse, International Bake Shoppe is a bit of a hidden gem, at least when it comes to lunch. They are well known in the area for their wedding cakes, but not as many people know that they also serve soup, sandwiches and salads. I discovered it a couple of years ago after getting my hair cut at the salon in the same building. I am a huge fan of sandwiches, and they have some of the best in town. I've yet to be disappointed by anything I've had. The soup is fantastic as well.

The interior is clean, bright and slightly retro. Form follows function. This place does what it does well, and the food speaks for itself. No frills needed.

I haven't tried any of the pastries yet, but would be willing to bet they're delicious.

Hands down, best chicken salad ever.

And the best part? Check out those prices. I got my meal for a little over $5 after tax. Actually, I'd say the prices are the second best part. The best part is that the staff is always very warm and friendly. That's kind of priceless these days.
What are the hidden gems in your area?
